'Rare' Tipper ?

This is a test forum to highlight the best and worst of the CCKWs on the road. It will be HEAVILY MODERATED. If you post a critique, you BETTER have a TM, Part number or Reference to back it up... otherwise it will not be approved. Basically its to discuss running CCKWs and point out the good, bad, and things that need further explored. Since there are so many new CCKW owners hopefully this can become a guide of sorts.

This truck was an e-bay posting. So that right there should be a red flag. Seller is unimportant... but what he says is:

GMC CCKW 353 RARE tipper truck European 1942 WW 2

This GMC is well equipped and perfectly maintained, has banjo axles, rare Hercules hydraulics and the early wooden steering wheel. Lights, hydraulics, brakes, everything works and is all original. Interior very tidy, original identification plates still in place, original army dash with blackouts also still in place. Original GMC engine, aircleaner and horn. It has some traces of usage and being almost 70 years old,, but always being taken care off and that is noticable in every part of this vehicle.This vehicle is still being used in liberty parades and memorial tours in and around The Netherlands.

Oh dear lord the lies. (13)NO tippers were made in 1942. There were only 1301 dump trucks in the ENTIRE CCKW series made without a winch. Since the hoist mechanism is NOT original production THIS AIN'T ONE OF THEM. Plus the asymetrical grill puts it in 1943 production time frame. Umm.. (2)These are all obviously repro. I bet a warm diet soda that the Pubs data plate say SNL-G508 and TM 9-801 (a 41-42 would still be on the TM10 series). (3)Also missing the wiper covers. (4)The actual 'original' data plate is not shown (with the DOD, SN, weights etc).

(5)Thats not a wooden steering wheel, (6)nor are the dash light original.

Buuttt.... (7)battery cut off switch (8)brake fluid reservoir (very European things) (9)harnesses should be cloth, not taped (9a) wrong voltage regulator).

(10)That is NOT an original tipper hoist or subframe. (11)Missing right side tailgate actuator. So the real selling point (all original is an outright LIE. HEIL and Gar Wood were the only hoist manufacturers.

There are many other issues with this being an 'original' truck. (14) large mouth gas tank (not a 42 feature) (15) mirror on passenger side (16) no cab rear view mirror....

16 errors (and those are from 20+ feet away pictures) should be enough to tell you this is NOT an original CCKW tipper.
