Spare Tire rack question

A club member finally found a spare tire carrier. What we are wondering is there is what I think is a locking stud that goes threw the frame. His is rusted too much to identify what it's suppose to look like! Can anyone tell us what type of stud it is and maybe have a photo for both inside and outside of the frame?

Its just a basic stud and nut.

Looking at TM10-1562 (May 1943)

First image shows the carrier and associated parts.

Second page is just to show its held on by a simple nut.

The nuts to actually hold the tire to the carrier look exactly like the inner tire lug, but with no outer threads. So if your grind/lathe off the threads of a standard inner lug nut, you'll have the same thing used on the spare tire carrier.

Early trucks did use a lock and key that would fit over the stud, but later models stopped this and went with a pin through a hold in the stud. Not sure if the nut changed to a castle nut. But photos show a chain and pin.

If you use the online parts manual seach and look for 2139480 you'll see the later items that include the pin

I'm trying to reproduce a spare tire carrier for my CCKW as to date I have not found one . I borrowed a Chevy one to use as a pattern. Does anyone know if the chey is different in any way than a CCKW carrier. I ask because the Studebaker US6 spare tire carrier does have a thinner Latch piece .i need to also make a set of bumperettes and could really use a pattern in cardboard or dimensions to help in the reproduction.

No, they are the same part.

There might be some minor changes for the early/late vehicles like the deletion of a lock and key. But the carrier itself is basically the same. I have had both CCKW and G506 carriers and they are identical. Something stupid like the anti-rattle spring might be different. But nothing from photos looks wildly different.

As for making one, its been done. Some guy wanted $1500 for a copy. lol no. Its about $300 to make. Waterjet the templates, weld the legs. Bend the steel plate and have the latch bar CNC bent. If you don't have local shops than shipping will be the biggest expense.

The latch is about 2in thick, so getting stock and waterjetting to rough shape then hand finish seems to be the only way to make it. If you don't want to waterjet you can bandsaw, but water cutting is a so cheap now a days. But if you can't mock them up in solidworks or some other CAD program then its quite easily done by hand with a good ruler and graph paper.

Honestly, we are currently in a WWII MV lul. Parts are just not commanding the prices they did 10-15 years ago. Interest in the hobby has waned quiet a bit in the last 5 or so years.

You need to be on all the MV facebook groups. The fourms like G503 are nice, but I've seen more (or at least most of the same) people in the FB groups and the parts are also more available.

As for rear bumpers... I don't think anyone has ever repo'd them. My first guess is that they were stamped.. which means dies and a big press. That's a lot of money.

I live in the coal region and presses that can bend thick metal are all over.

Maybe one day I'll take a bumper over and see what they would charge to make.. If they can fab up classifiers then bending 1/4in steel can't be an issue. Right now the G506 is just so far on the back burner.. .plus its cold.
